In anticipation of cinema's 50th anniversary, author focuses on the Kulturfilm. At best disparaged, this type of film is just as old as cinema itself. However, it took a number of decades before it transcended the status of "postcard films" (travel and scenics) that punctuated early commercial film programs. According to author, a true documentary is more than a recording of a landscape. It is shaped around an idea, for instance landscape in relation to its inhabitants. However, author wonders whether this type of interdependence would create a "Spielfilmmoment" that, in its turn, requires an artistic treatment. In search of an answer author interviews the filmmaking couple Wolf and Edith Hart, taking their innovative films "Der Landbriefträger" and "Rüstungsarbeiter" as examples. The answer, basically, is that if film is considered an art form it cannot but appeal to documentary, too. A documentary conceived as a mere recording instrument abandons its duty to show the essence of things.
