This issue on audio-visual, educational media focuses on their use in schools, universities, popular education or vocational training since the late-19th century. In recent years the growing body of work on the history of audio-visual educational media has intensified methodological efforts to grasp the interplay between institutional policies, screening situations, and the form, style, and content of the media employed in various educational situations. In particular, the (heuristic) concept of the dispositif has proved to be productive, because it allows to map these different elements in a large variety of performative educational situations and their pragmatic interrelations: expectations, requirements, and goals.

This collection of essays aims to move beyond the state of research into so-called ‘useful cinema’ by engaging with educational film as a prolific historical source and methodological testing ground for writing film history as a historiography of practices. The concept of practice serves here as a mid-level notion in between the scopes of structures and individual acts which highlights the situated, processual and 'non-rationalist' dimensions of media usage and its organisation.

Konferenz "Educational Film as Practice: Settings, Procedures, Agencies" (9.–11. Juni 2022, Wien)



This conference presented findings from the 20th-century history of educational film (school, university or popular education, consultation or vocational training) from the vantage point of film practice. Even more so than many other types of films, educational films were not supposed to be appreciated as self-contained artifacts. Whether in classrooms, lecture halls or makeshift sites of popular education, educational films were often made to be accompanied – by live lectures, slides, booklets, other films or film fragments – and embedded in lesson plans and participatory tasks. This matter of the screening dispositif is one of several ways in which the research of educational film foregrounds the notion of film practice. Another case in point are the specific regulations and institutional networks that structure the use of film in educational settings – specifically films aimed at primary and secondary education – and that negotiate the conditions on which the moving image has been accepted and promoted as a teaching aid. Finally, the concept of practice also highlights matters of agency: Writing about educational film as practice means grasping beyond a history of institutions and incorporating localized DIY efforts and ‘deviant’ uses of films and equipment in education.

Workshop "Lehrfilmpraktiken" (17.–18. September 2021, Wien)



Thema des zweitägigen Workshops sind nicht Lehrfilme, sondern Lehrfilmpraktiken: Gemeint sind damit einerseits die Anordnungen, Rahmungen und pädagogischen Prozesse, in denen Filme lehrhaft ‚gemacht‘ wurden, andererseits die Weisen, auf die Filme Lehrpraktiken ihrerseits geprägt und modifziert haben. Diskussionsgrundlage für die versammelten Expert_innen sind Präsentationen aus dem Projektteam und von drei internationalen Gästen (Kerrin von Engelhardt, Audrey Hostettler, Anja Sattelmacher), sowie andere Programmelemente: ein Filmprogramm und ein geführter Spaziergang an Orte der Lehrfilmpraktiken in der Umgebung des Tagungsorts.
