• On the banks of the Neckar the film discovers a land of historic castles and Burgen, vineyards and orchards. The sense of discovery is heightened by the film’s many dolly tracking shots. Welcome to Oz, Austrian-style (of course, in color!). This is a nostalgic, not to say escapist, portait of Burgenland, where innocence (represented by children, practically the only inhabitants featured in the film, and an apple tree) still exists. But with innocence comes vulnerability, as the featured towns’ walls and strongholds are said to be no match for today’s weaponry—the film’s only contemporary reference. Burgenland, the narration tells, is therefore merely representative of other eras, from medieval times up to the Rococo; an open-air museum. Its educational qualities , however, are minimal: a bit of history, a bit of architecture. But ironically, perhaps unwittingly, the film’s lack of streetlife gives the locations a fanciful, unreal atmosphere (indeed, like Oz it is unlivable). And as it features no hotels or cafés, it‘s hard to define it as a tourist film either. But not for lack of trying, though. As Ulrich Döge writes:
"Obwohl zwischen 1939 and 1945 kaum noch ausländische Touristen nach Deutschland reisten, erhielt Cürlis weiterhin Aufträge der RDV [Reichsbahnzentrale für den deutschen Reiseverkehr]. 1941 dokumentierte BRONZEGUSS die Anfertigung einer von Lore Friedrich-Gronau entworfenen Plastik, welche eine Pose der Tänzerinnen Hedi und Margot Höpfner in Johan Strauss’ ‘Kaiserwalzer’ festhält. 1942 erlebte BACH – MOZART – BEETHOVEN. DEUTSCHE SCHUFEN FÜR DIE WELT in der römischen Filiale der RDV seine Uraufführung vor geladenen Gästen. AUS DEN EISEN GESCHMIEDET und – in Farben – ROMANTISCHES BURGENLAND blieben kriegsbedingt unvollendet, wurden erst nach der Kapitulation fertig gestellt und gelangten als Überläufer in den westdeutschen Verleih."

• The sharpness of details gets lost in its full shots, the result of its being a reduction print. The film was licensed for exhibition, on April 20, 1953, as a 307m, 35mm print that had actually been planned as part of a trilogy for nontheatrical screenings; on its own now, it was part of the Beiprogramm.
