Excerpt from a lecture delivered at a conference titled 'Jugend und Film' that focuses on film's truthfulness. That is to say, not truth in the sense of the naked facts of the world, but as sincere, lived experience. But as film is also matter of technique and selection, its truthfulness should also be seen as the result of creation ("Dichtung"). This is the first question the film examiner is faced with: to what extent is a film real and truthful? And this implies a second question: to what extent should his judgment take the current state of the art of filmmaking into account rather than what it could have been? The evalutiuon of films is a tradeoff between the possible and the ideal; its considerations will, therefore, inevitably change over time.
