The author welcomes the spread of educational film to wider areas of experience, sports specifically. However, the increasing sophistication of the depiction and performance of sports has rather made these films kinofähig: the topic becomes the background to aspects that are expected to draw larger audiences. In alpine films this had led to sensationalism (e.g. romantic storylines, spectacular scenery). While the author observes that Lehrfilme do not draw mass audiences, he warns their producers that concessions to mainstream tastes may create style conflicts. He illustrates this with a few, then recent mountain and ski films, notably J.B.L. Noel's "The epic of the Everest" (1924) and Arnold Fanck's "Das Wunder des Schneeschuhs" (1925). Even Fanck's "Die weiẞe Kunst" (1924), with its first five eminently instructive reels, is marred in the final sixth reel by a mountain ascent on skis for which the foregoing instructions are blatantly deficient. If this tendency persists, the author fears, the number of victims among practitioners of these sports will increase, while it will give the weiẞe Kunst as a whole a bad name.
